Background
| Alternative Names | Interleukin 4, Lymphocyte Stimulatory Factor 1, B-Cell Stimulatory Factor 1, B Cell Growth Factor 1, BCGF1, BSF1, Binetrakin, Pitrakinra, MGC79402, IL4e12, IgG1 Induction Factor |
| Function | Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a cytokine involved in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses. It promotes the differentiation of naïve T cells into Th2 cells, which in turn stimulate B cells to upregulate IgE antibodies. IL-4 is produced by mast cells, eosinophils, basophils and committed Th2 cells. There are two cell-dependent receptor complexes, either a heterodimer of IL-4 R alpha (CD124) and the common gamma chain (CD132) associated with hematopoietic cells or a heterodimer of IL-4 R alpha and IL-13 R alpha 1 (CD213A1) associated with non-hematopoietic cells. |
| Tissue Specificity | IL-4 expression has been identified in lymph node and placenta. |
| Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
| Involvement in Disease | Allergic inflammation, allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and multiple sclerosis), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). |
