| Function | The soluble form of human Delta-like 1 homolog (sDLK-1) is a circulating glycoprotein that primarily acts as a master regulator of cell differentiation and metabolic adaptation. sDLK-1 generally functions to maintain stem and progenitor cells in an undifferentiated, proliferative state. It is a well-characterized inhibitor of several mesodermal differentiation pathways. sDLK-1 functions as an endocrine signaling molecule, particularly during periods of high metabolic demand like pregnancy or early development. Unlike its typical inhibitory roles, soluble DLK-1 has been shown to stimulate angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) by activating Notch1/Akt signaling in endothelial cells. In certain contexts, such as pancreatic cancer models, sDLK-1 exhibits antitumor effects by suppressing cell migration, wound healing, and colony formation. Because it is highly expressed in the fetus and placenta, maternal serum levels of sDLK-1 are used as a marker for fetal growth restriction and other pregnancy complications. |
