Background
Alternative Names | Interleukin 13, NC30, P600 |
Function | Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a cytokine primarily produced by T-helper cells, particularly Th2 cells, as well as other immune cells such as mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. IL-13 plays a central role in regulating immune responses, particularly in allergic inflammation, asthma, and autoimmune diseases. It promotes the differentiation of naive T cells into Th2 cells, enhances the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in B cells, and contributes to the recruitment and activation of eosinophils. Additionally, IL-13 is involved in the remodeling of tissues, particularly in the lung, where it induces mucus production, smooth muscle contraction, and fibrosis. It also influences the regulation of Th2 cytokine production (e.g., IL-4, IL-5) and enhances the function of macrophages, eosinophils, and other immune cells in the context of chronic inflammation. IL-13 signals through a receptor complex composed of two components: the IL-13 receptor alpha (IL-13Rα) and the IL-4 receptor alpha (IL-4Rα). The IL-13Rα chain binds IL-13, and this interaction is enhanced by the presence of IL-4Rα, which forms the IL-13 receptor complex. This receptor complex then activates intracellular signaling through the Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway, particularly STAT6. |
Tissue Specificity | IL-13 expression has been reported in lung tissue, lymphoid tissue (lymph nodes, spleen), skin tissue and intestinal tissue, as wells as Th2 cells, mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, NK (natural killer) cells, macrophages, epithelial cells and endothelial cells. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of IL-13 is associated with allergic and chronic inflammation (asthma, atopic dermatitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic rhinitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and cancer (tumor microenvironment, immune evasion). |
