Determined by a cell proliferation assay using HUVEC human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The ED50 for this effect is typically 1-5 ng/mL. | Recombinant Human VEGF 165 (2 ug/lane) on SDS-PAGE under reducing (R) and non-reducing (NR) conditions. The gel was stained using Coomassie® Blue showing single bands at 20 kDa (R) and 39 kDa (NR), and purity greater than 98%. |
Background
Alternative Names | Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, VEGF-A, Vascular Permeability Factor, VPF, MVCD1 |
Function | Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is involved in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, neurogenesis and endothelial cell growth during embryonic development and in adults. It induces endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and permeabilization of blood vessels. VEGF is upregulated during hypoxia, inflammation, tissue repair and during neovascularization of tumors and adipose tissue. Additionally, VEGF induces neural progenitor cell proliferation and regulates mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. VEGF binds to the VEGFR1 (FLT1) and VEGFR2 (KDR/CD309) receptors, however, Neuropilin-1 will also bind VEGF as a coreceptor for VEGFR2. |
Tissue Specificity | VEGF expression has been reported in vascular endothelial cells, ovaries, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and most tumors. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | VEGF dysregulation is implicated in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and cancer. |
